  • Faculty Qualifications
  • ELC instructors are highly-qualified, experienced professionals. Each instructor holds at least a master's degree in ESL, linguistics or in a related field while some have earned doctoral degrees. Instructors at the ELC are actively involved in local and national professional organizations and regularly present papers at educational conferences. Several instructors have published ESL-related textbooks and articles.
  • Housing
  • While attending the ELC, students can experience living on-campus in the Drexel World House Dormitory featuring shared rooms, a kitchen and laundry facilities. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Students have the option to live off-campus at the nearby International House, a 15-minute walk from the ELC. Off-campus housing offers privacy for students who prefer a more independent lifestyle. Homestays are also available for students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. The ELC may introduce private off-campus apartments; however students must make their own arrangements. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
  • Surrounding Area
  • The Drexel campus is ideally situated in the University City area, a growing residential and educational community located just minutes by bus or subway from Philadelphia's historic, artistic and cultural Center City district. Philadelphia was the United States capital from 1790-1800 and is one of the nation's most historical cities. With a population of 1.8 million people, Philadelphia is the 5th largest city in the United States and is recognized as the safest among the nation's 12 largest cities. Visitors and residents can visit a variety of cultural attractions including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in America, and over 50 different museums. Sports lovers cheer on Philadelphia's professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey teams throughout the year. Philadelphia's location offers a temperate climate and four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are especially pleasant due to the warm winds off the Atlantic Ocean. The downtown Amtrak station provides easy travel to New York City, Washington, D.C. and Boston and the nearby Pocono Mountains and New Jersey shore are less than a 2-hour drive from the Drexel campus.
  • About the College/University

    • About This Course
    • The ELC offers four 11-week sessions of Intensive English classes per year. Half-term sessions are also available and are 6 weeks in length. Students enrolled in the Intensive English Program receive 18 hours of in-class instruction per week and can also receive up to 6 additional hours by attending optional elective classes free of charge.

The program offers 6 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. At the start of each session, students take English language placement tests to help determine the levels best-suited to their abilities. At the end of each 6 or 11-week term, students who have successfully completed all course requirements are awarded a certificate of completion. The program's curriculum focuses on preparing students for academic success at Drexel or other universities, developing professional skills for the 21st century, and building cultural awareness. In addition to 15 hours of Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing classes each week, students choose a 3-hour Special Topic course to focus on areas such as business or academic English, language skills, cultural studies or test preparation. Students have the option to attend additional elective classes for supplementary practice in grammar, pronunciation, and conversation. Advanced-level students may be permitted to combine their English study with part-time university coursework after completing one term at the ELC. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to use the ELC's interactive, multimedia language lab to practice their English listening, pronunciation and TOEFL skills. Advising is available for ELC students who wish to apply for university admission.

Students are given the opportunity to meet with native English speakers through the Conversation Network to practice their English conversational skills outside of class and develop a richer understanding of American culture. The ELC also arranges a wide variety of weekly activities, trips and tours in the Philadelphia area at discounted rates to provide its students with the chance to learn about American culture while practicing their English. The ELC arranges additional social opportunities for its students which may include recreational or cultural activities, shopping, attending on-campus events, or trips to destinations like Washington D.C., New York City, Lancaster County, or Atlantic City. ELC students who continue their studies more than one term can apply for the Allison Rose Fellowship, a scholarship which provides $1,000 tuition remission in return for clerical work at the ELC and leadership of student activities.

Small, interactive classes are emphasized. The majority of classes have an average of 10 to 12 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
