  • Information
    • About the ESL Program
    • The American English Language Program (AELP) at Northern Kentucky University offers English language classes to students from around the world who wish to improve their grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Graduates of the six-level English program typically go on to study in one of the many undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered at NKU or other colleges and universities around the United States. Enrollment in AELP also helps students gain valuable English language skills to perform well on the TOEFL and IELTS tests, improve their careers or job possibilities, and develop confidence to live, study, and work in an English language environment.
AELP’s diverse group of students – who come from Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe – enjoy many opportunities to interact with American and international students. Dynamic and engaging classes from experienced ESL instructors 25 hours per week help to make learning English efficient and enjoyable. The educational experience continues outside of class in casual conversations with the friendly students and campus community at NKU during class breaks, at lunchtime, and after classes. There are also many opportunities to meet and talk with Americans in daily life at the residence halls, through student organizations and campus activities, or during events throughout the year in Highland Heights and the Cincinnati area.

AELP offers sessions throughout the year with 16-week sessions during both fall and spring semesters, and an 8-week session in the summer. Full-time students receive 25 hours of in-class instruction per week and semi-intensive (part-time) students receive 15 hours of instructions per week. Six levels of classes are available from beginner to advanced.

All students at AELP are taught by highly-skilled instructors so that they can improve English communication skills and develop confidence at school or at work. Through the courses offered, students will also be able to develop their test-taking skills so that they will be better able to pass important proficiency tests along the way. Students in the program are encouraged to develop social connections and friendships to further improve the overall study abroad experience at AELP. In addition to developing overall English proficiency, teachers help students to better understand and respect grammar skills. At the same time, students will gain a better understanding of both American culture and the university environment while studying on the Northern Kentucky University campus. Outside of class, all students are encouraged to join clubs and university organizations and take advantage of all the services and benefits being at NKU.

Class sizes average from 10-15 students, which is the ideal size for effective English language instruction. To supplement classroom learning, students are also given the opportunity to have weekly conversation partner meetings with NKU students.
