    • Housing
    • While attending the Center for ESL, students are encouraged to live on the University of Kentucky’s campus. In the last five years, UK has invested significant resources in student housing, and the majority of UK students live in these newly constructed residences. Students who stay on campus benefit from living with American students—they increase their opportunities for cultural and language exchanges, are more able to participate in organized on-campus activities, can eat at any on-campus dining hall, and are more likely to be successful in the classroom. However, living on campus is not required, and many students chose to live in private apartments surrounding campus. Housing in Lexington is very affordable, and the University of Kentucky can recommend off-campus housing options at various prices. While homestays are not available, the Center for ESL partners with the International Hospitality Program, and our students can be matched with American families around Lexington with whom they can enjoy dinners, holidays, and American culture. https://esl.as.uky.edu/housing-information

    • Intensive English Program

    • About This Course
    • The Center for ESL’s Intensive English Program is an academic English language program that helps students gain English proficiency for full admission to academic programs at the University of Kentucky or other U.S. colleges and universities. The Intensive Program offers five, eight-week sessions per year (two sessions during the spring semester, two sessions during the fall semester, and one during the summer semester) and one, four-week summer session. Students receive 20 hours of in-class instruction per week. In Fall and Spring, classes meet Monday through Friday. In Summer, students attend class Monday through Thursday, with longer weekends allowing students to enjoy extracurricular activities and summer travel. Seven levels of classes are available from Basic English (for students with no working knowledge of English) to Level Six (for advanced students nearly ready for matriculation to their intended majors).

Beginning level students learn basic English vocabulary and structure in small classes that enable one-on-one teacher interaction. Classes are divided into four sections: grammar, reading, writing and listening and speaking. As students move on to more challenging levels of the intensive program, academic preparation is added to focus students on both language and culture appropriate to studying at a U.S. university. Advanced level classes consist of three core classes and a variety of electives. Previous electives include: American Cinema, Business and Professional Communication, iBT TOEFL preparation, Vocabulary, and the American Essay. All classes emphasize skills integration and interaction among students and teachers.

Class sizes average from 12 to 15 students, which is the ideal size for effective English language instruction. Students can take advantage of the Center for ESL Learning Center, where trained ESL consultants offer assistance with homework, special classes on U.S. academic culture, and TOEFL tutorials, among other educational programs.
