    • About the ESL Program
    • Established in 1964, the English Language Institute (ELI) in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh provides language and cultural studies to students interested in improving their English ability for academic, professional, or personal success. The ELI offers an intensive English program, as well as language support courses, TOEFL preparation courses, and short summer programs. TOEFL testing is also available on campus. The ELI believes students learn English faster when they are actively using the language. For this reason, a special activities director organizes events such as picnics, parties, skiing, skating, sightseeing tours, movies, conversation hours, and trips to other cities. In addition, ELI students are part of the University of Pittsburgh community and have full access to all libraries, recreational facilities and cultural events. The ELI has full accreditation from CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and is a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs), an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English Programs in the United States, and EnglishUSA (The American Association of Intensive English Programs) which promotes professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs.

    • The Intensive English Program offers three 13-week sessions throughout the year, beginning in early September, early January, and early May. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20 hours of intensive in-class instruction per week.

The University of Pittsburgh English Language Institute does not have classes for beginners. The Program offers 5 levels of English classes, from high beginner to advanced. All students take a placement test upon arrival. Students who place below the high beginner level will be directed to other English programs. (* High Beginner is approximately equivalent to 24 on the internet-based TOEFL(iBT) but students will take the placement test on the first day of each program.)

Students develop their skills in the areas of writing (organization, accuracy and composing essays), speaking (fluency, pronunciation and giving presentations), reading (developing vocabulary and fluency, improving comprehension), listening (understanding lectures, radio and TV, and conversational English). The Program also emphasizes English grammar. An optional TOEFL preparation course is available to all students; the TOEFL exam is also available on campus. A 6-week Professional and Academic English Course is offered June-July for graduate and professional students. Students are encouraged to independently develop their English skills outside of class by using the Program's modern multi-media center including state-of-the-art audio-visual and computer technology.

The ELI believes that students learn English faster when they are actively using the language. A special activities coordinator organizes events such as picnics, parties, skiing, skating, sightseeing tours, movies, and trips to other cities. A special community outreach coordinator organizes volunteer activities, small conversation groups, and conversation partners. ELI students are part of the University of Pittsburgh community and have access to free and discounted cultural activities throughout the city and can use recreational/sports facilities, computer labs and libraries on campus.

ESL at the University of Pittsburgh
The ELI at the University of Pittsburgh is the best academy for learning English. We had a lot of activities, for example going to movies, going to museums, eating Mexican wings, volunteering and travelling. Teachers and staff were very kind and their teaching methods were excellant. It was a little bit hard because we had to do a lot of homework. But we absolutely improved our English skills.
I think Pittsburgh is one of the safest places in the United States. People are also kind. You will be satisfied studying in Pittsburgh.

      University of Pittsburgh
