    • About This Course
    • The Advanced Academic Preparation Program is a seven-week intensive course offered through Columbia University’s American Language Program (ALP) designed for students who plan to enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program in the United States. The program is offered once a year during the summer for those students serious about continuing advanced studies at Columbia or another university. Advanced Academic Preparation is also the first part of Columbia Advantage, a three-term program offered for those students interested in also taking courses during the fall and spring semesters. All Advanced Academic Preparation applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of at least 575 (PBT), 230 (CBT) or 89 (iBT) to apply and should be prepared to submit a copy of test scores and additional documents to the school upon submitting their application.

The curriculum for Advanced Academic Preparation focuses on the study of Advanced English and academic skills required for future degree studies. Upon arrival at the school, all students must sit for the ALP English Placement Test and achieve the required score. Those students who do not pass the placement test will be required to join the regular Intensive Program in English as a requirement for enrollment. The Advanced Academic Preparation Program prepares students for intensive university-level academic study by focusing on necessary skills in academic writing such as writing an academic essay, effective use of advanced vocabulary and understanding issues about academic honesty. To prepare for the difficult workload required at university, students are taught important research skills and given an extensive tour of the libraries at Columbia University. Program participants improve their English language fluency and increase their understanding of advanced-level vocabulary necessary for complex class discussions. In addition, presentation skills are improved with drills in pronunciation, voice projection and appropriate body language.

      Capital of the World
Columbia is an amazing university. I have learned a lot, and I have taken some courses that really opened my mind. One of the most important things I have learned is that I cannot only depend on classes, but I also have to learn on my own. In Brazil, we have a large amount of classes and little time to study on our own. Here, it's a little bit of the opposite: I only took four classes last semester and had much more time on my own to study and do my projects. I think that the international exposure I have here at Columbia was really interesting. In Brazil, my university, the University of São Paulo, is one of the biggest. Still, there are not many international students. Here at Columbia, I have met people from the most different parts of the world: Asia, Africa, Europe, South America. I get to find out about other cultures and other customs, which is really nice. One of the most valuable things to me is being able to live here in New York. I was born in a big city – in São Paulo, Brazil. But here in New York, it's the capital of the world. I've been able to meet people from all parts of the world and able to live in a city with lots of cultural opportunities. It's one of the most valuable aspects of coming to Columbia and to New York City. I have never lived abroad before. Living here means being immersed in a different language, and this comes from being immersed in a different culture. There's something special about being here.

      It's Ivy League!
I went to New York once. I came here as a tourist, so I went to Fifth Avenue, the Statue of Liberty – but it was closed, the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, the U.N., and the Empire State Building. You know, tourist stuff. I had never visited Columbia before. This is my first time at Columbia and my second time in the U.S. as a student. I did an internship a year ago in Washington, D.C. I worked for Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance. Well, it's Columbia – it's Ivy League! It's one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States. Barack Obama studied here. And the professors, they have real world experience. They're not just experts in theory.
Plus, I live on campus. I'm on Broadway, and I'm in the middle of everything.

Grow personally as well as professionally
The coursework has been so extensive, I have not been able to go around New York City much. But I come from a completely different culture, so the vitality of the city helps you to inculcate a sense of independence and grow personally as well as professionally. I come from a business family, so my goals are more specific to being in business. This was an opportunity for me to view different aspects of business. It's a simulated M.B.A. program for me where I can get a global view and prepare myself for the next business venture I encounter.

The Most Talented people around the world
So many doors open when you're living in New York and attending Columbia: After my semester at Columbia, I landed an internship at Warner Music. I had taken a course at Columbia Business School, and I was fortunate enough to hear the CEO of Warner Music, Stephen Cooper, as a guest lecturer in my class. I applied for an internship at his company, and I got it. So during my second semester, I wasn't studying at Columbia, but I was working in New York as an intern at Warner Music. That would never have happened if I hadn't been a student at Columbia. I think Columbia is able to attract the most talented people around the world. Therefore, I learned from the best faculty. In my case, that led to building a really good network, having good connections, and preparing me for real-life business cases. Even now, what I learned at Columbia helps me every day.

      A Very, Very Helpful Course!
I really recommend that people who want to improve their English attend this program. It is no doubt that one of the Ivy Leavue schools is able to provide the best education in the US. I have learned a lot, especially in writing. Teachers are very professional and hard-working, and always willing to help you. They give new materials everyday and detail them, so you learn different things everyday. They assign an reasonable amount of homework everyday, and it will not kill you so don't worry :) I recommend choosing this program if you're a hard-working student and eager to enhance your English skills, it's worth it!

      Columbia University
